The JASON Project
Teacher: Deanna Flanagan
Grades: 6 - 8
Meets: Tuesday 1:45 - 2:45
Class Description:
THEO is blessed to announce Deanna Flanagan is joining our teaching staff for the fall of 2009 and will be teaching her specialty—The JASON Project.
The JASON Project (www.jason.org) is used worldwide to teach students science from an approach that includes language, geography, and more. Dr Ballard, the man who found the Titanic, founded this non-profit entity more than a decade ago. The JASON Project was purchased by National Geographic a few years ago. Each year they publish a new study for the kids to learn along with professional scientists working in the field.
The JASON Project curriculums are written for 6th - 8th graders and inspire a love of science as can’t be found from textbook learning. The topics are similar to what scientists use in the field and they have online activities and projects for the students to expand their learning outside of the classroom experience.
Not only are we blessed to offer The JASON Project at THEO but we are blessed because Deanna has actually been a teacher trainer/representative for them.
This year, we will be studying - Resilient Planet - protecting our ecological future. This JASON is billed as an ecological unit covering Invaders, Survivors, Paradise Lost, Paradise Found and The Rescue. To get lots more information please check out www.Jason.org. Your student will spend lots of time here during this class. This will be a hands on class that moves fast and expects all homework assigned to be completed prior to coming to class so that we can make the most use of our class sessions together. We will be investigating current scientific research going on in 5 different locations and do experiments, reading, research and viewing websites.
Normally JASON is a semester long study and this is a two-semester class, so Deanna will pull in material from Monster Storms and more to make sure the kids maximize their learning this year.
Prerequisites: A willing learner who will do their homework!
Maximum number of students: 20
Cost: $35/month from September-May with a supply fee that hasn’t yet been set.
